Found some old sign pictures

I was updating the pictures on our computer and found some pictures of some Signs I had carved back in 2003, one for a gift, and one for I do not know what. I think it might have been given away, but Rob thinks I have it somewhere, but have just forgotten it.

Here they are:

Interesting concept for carving

Here is an interesting concept to consider carving:

Weekend Work - Plaques

I worked this weekend on roughing out some plaques to give as holiday gifts. It is the first time I have used the roto-zip and roughed out the carving before trying to finish the work with hand tools. I will have to shoot some photo's and add them to show what I have been working on.

I enjoyed myself... it was cool to control so smoothly the wood being removed, there were some oops's, but hopefully nothing that can't be concealed in the finishing process.

I keep thinking of the Junipers in mid west Utah, I want to make a trip down there to obtain some material for some power carving I want to do. Maybe I can take a day and make a trip of it with Robyn.

Christopher White

I found a book at timberline featuring the work of artist J. Christopher White. It is really interesting. The use of the twisted grains and movement of the wood in the sculpture is really intriguing. I really like this style, I think long term i would like to try some of this type of work. Here is a sample of his work:

And another one.

Free plans listing

I found this listing of free plan sites on the forum at wood carvers illustrated.

Well, at the risk of alienating everyone in the woodcarving world, I am going to post a list of websites offering free patterns. People ask for patterns, and we post the links and then they get lost in the ever growing maze of the Wood Carving Illustrated Forum website. Some of these patterns are for beginners, some are more advanced. They're not sorted by category, i.e. caricatures, relief, etc.--they're just listed. Some have been around for a long time, but they're great. So, when you're bored and need something to do, look through these links, and I'm sure you'll find something. If not, google on "free wood carving projects" or "free wood carving patterns", and then maybe you'll come up with some new ones. If you do, be kind enough to add the links of what you find to this thread so that others can use them, too. Same if you have some favorites that I haven't listed here. Thanks!

Anyway, here's what I've found so far:

Plans made for Christmas Gifts

I picked up some plan books at the bookstore yesterday and have selected some items that I will attempt for Christmas gifts this year. I hope they work out. They are some simple Santa Claus ornaments.

Wood Carving Crazy?

I think I am crazy! What is this about? I think it is a midlife crisis manifesting itself in multiple different ways. I want to do more carving, and I want to be good at it, good enough to support my family. Now That is crazy!
